The Phygital Mindset: Digital Complements, Not Competes With, Physical Church

In today’s post-COVID culture, the church has many challenges… one of which is what do we do with digital? Do we continue to broadcast our services? Or stop? Are the people who have not come back to the church building still a part of our church? What about the people who have connected to our church digitally and aren’t able to connect physically? How do we manage this mess?

In 2022 and beyond, digital will play a role in our churches. The unfortunate reality is, for many of our churches, we’ve positioned digital in competition with physical. Let’s really care about the physical environment and make that the #1 emphasis in our church strategy, but let’s also stream that service online so people can easily get that emphasis while at home… no longer coming to the building… And oh, btw, let’s evaluate the success of our church based on physical attendance so those people at home really don’t matter.

The unfortunate reality is that there is competition, there is conflict, with churches broadcasting their service online while at the same time putting so much emphasis on the physical expression of community. So what do you do? Let’s respect the live experience enough to not stream it, and instead take a phygital approach.

Stadia has developed a Phygital Church(™) framework that helps churches develop a strategy to help their church Thrive, Grow and Multiply Physically & Digitally. To accomplish this, Stadia is taking the strengths of Physical and the strengths of Digital and find ways to get them to work together.

So how do we get digital to complement what our churches are doing physically? That’s the heart of what we’re talking about in Future-Proofing Your Church” with Stadia Phygital. In Session 1, Host Jeff Reed brings in Matt Anderson from One Community Church, a multicultural church in Plano, Texas, who pivoted very hard towards digital as a result of COVID, but has seen his church thrive as a result of the digital shift even post-COVID. Come learn the philosophical and practical shifts you’ll need to get your church embracing the phygital mindset.

Here’s a hint. If all you’re doing digitally is broadcasting services, you’re really missing out on the whole purpose of digital. Effective digital is not about a megaphone blasting a message to millions of people. It’s about a relational conversation between a small group of people, maybe even 1 on 1. Now, what can that digital approach to towards disciplemaking…?

To find out the answer to that question, or how can digital help you prepare for the road ahead, join Jeff & Matt on Session 1 of Future-Proofing Your Church Thursday, December 9, 2:00 p.m. EST.

We are better together!

“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
