Leading Your Team Well
Episode 5 — Leading Multiple Generations of Staff

Generational differences range from small and insignificant to surprisingly drastic, especially when it comes to the workplace. Older generations value different environments and cultures in their jobs than younger generations. This presents a challenge to any church leader faced with a staff that is made up of more than one generation. It’s not always immediately clear when a generational difference is causing friction or mission drift.

That’s why William Vanderbloemen and Kadi Cole are sitting down with Grant Skeldon and Hannah Gronowski Barnett to walk through how to lead multiple generations of staff well.

Co-Hosts

Kadi Cole

Kadi’s love for leadership and development started at an early age with a strong passion to serve people combined with a deep hunger to learn how to help in ways that really make a difference. She is still on a quest to learn how she can help.

Kadi received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, WA) and served as a Registered Nurse in a Veteran’s Hospital Mental Health Unit (West Palm Beach, FL) for several years before being recruited as Director of Health and Wellness at Palm Beach Atlantic University. She was eventually promoted to Dean of Student Development, additionally overseeing Residential Life, the Discipline System, Student Leadership Development initiatives, and on-campus Student Development Programming. In addition, she earned a Masters Degree in Human Resource Development with special recognition for her expertise in Transformational Leadership.

But Kadi’s real passion has always been serving the community by working with leaders to increase their effectiveness in whatever role of influence they have been given. She has logged thousands of volunteer hours helping people grow and learn how to fully fulfill their calling, with a special emphasis on serving people of faith and local church ministries.

In early 2000, Kadi was recruited by her local church to help them navigate scaling a fast-growing faith community and innovative ministry strategy. She served 16 years at Christ Fellowship Church (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) leading in a variety of critical leadership roles as the church grew from 3,500 to 23,000, launched eight additional campuses, and exceeded $50m budget. Her final role was as Executive Director of Multisite in which she oversaw all campuses, built a campus launch strategy, and created the Kaléo School of Leadership, an innovative leadership development system for growing campus volunteer and staff teams from within the congregation.

In 2016, Kadi transitioned from full-time church leadership to working directly with leaders in business and ministry through Kadi Cole & Company as well as key roles with Leadership Network, Replenish MInistries, and Multisite Solutions. Kadi works extensively with multi-site churches, technology businesses, and individual leaders from a variety of professional settings. Kadi’s newest passion project is to help church leaders who want to do a better job developing the female leadership talent in their congregations.

In addition, Kadi is an engaging, practical, and down-to-earth speaker and writer on a variety of topics related to leadership, organizational development, spiritual growth, parenting, and living a full life. She lives in sunny South Florida with her family and loves visiting her roots in Montana, garage sales, intense Scrabble games, home DIY projects, and potluck dinners with friends. Plus, she’s always reading at least 4 books at a time.

William Vanderbloemen

William has been able to combine over 15 years of ministry experience as a Senior Pastor with the best practices of Executive Search to provide churches with a unique offering: a deep understanding of local church work with the very best knowledge and practices of professional executive search.

Prior to his founding The Vanderbloemen Search Group, William studied executive search under a mentor with over 25 years of executive search at the highest level. His learning taught him the very best corporate practices, including the search strategies used by the internationally known firm Russell Reynolds.

William also has experience as a Manager in Human Resources in a Fortune 200 company, where he focused on integration of corporate culture and succession planning.

Prior to executive search, William led growth and innovation in churches in North Carolina, Alabama, and Houston. During his time in Alabama, William had the chance to help rebuild and relocate an ailing congregation, and lead them to new levels of growth. At 31, he was elected Senior Pastor for the First Presbyterian Church of Houston, a church of about 5,000 adults and 1,500 children strong. It is Houston’s oldest congregation.

William is regularly invited to speak across the country in both church services and as a resource to churches and conferences on leadership. His book Search: The Pastoral Search Committee Handbook was released through B&H Books in June 2016. His latest book is Culture Wins: The Roadmap To An Irresistible Workplace and is released through Savio Republic. Finally, his book Next: Pastoral Succession That Works on effective pastoral leadership and succession was originally released through Baker Books in September 2014, but an Updated & Expanded version of Next followed in March 2020.

William holds degrees from Wake Forest University and Princeton Theological Seminary.

Besides helping connect churches with key staff and preaching, William spends a whole lot of time with family and connecting with people.

William is an avid social networker. Whether connecting with friends, candidates for searches he is doing, or church members, he loves to network, and he would love to interact with you through Facebook and/or Twitter William, his wife Adrienne, their seven children, and their poodles Moses and Pearl live in Houston. In his free time, William enjoys running, working out, and caddying for his kids, who are now better golfers than he is.

We are better together!

“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
John 17:22-23
