In a season of frustration and ambiguity, pastors like Surekha Hulugalle are pivoting and even thriving when it comes to multiplying disciples. Originally from Sri Lanka, Pastor Surekha is now training micro-church planters in the UK to make an impact all over the globe. In this week’s episode of Practical Multiplication with Ralph Moore and Myron Pierce, our listeners take a journey through the world of planting micro-churches and what it takes to train planters in a digital age.

What started as a small house church just 7 years ago has blossomed into over 50 churches planted by people trained and sent out by Surekha and his wife. This hasn’t always been an easy journey, but God is clearly using them to multiply disciples.

Moore asks his cohosts, “Americans have a tendency to display cultural superiority at times. What can we learn from Surekha about bridging gaps and reaching people with the Gospel?”

“God has melted our hearts to reach people beyond our “Jerusalem,” Surekha explains, “and in doing so, has given us the opportunity to minister to different cultures, some that don’t even speak English. We can reach out because we have the language of the love of Jesus.”

Surekha shares a story of ministering to a man who had been fighting on the opposite side of the civil war in Sri Lanka, someone who there would have been obvious tensions with. God humbled that man and he ended up giving his life to Christ. Through what could have been a disastrous relationship, God ushered in a ministry of reconciliation and hope to countless people.

In addition to reaching adults from other cultures, Surekha is training up youth to plant digital churches. “I can’t be the missionary to 17-year-olds in the digital world,” jokes Surekha.“They speak an entirely different language than I do!”

Responding to Pierce’s questions about training programs for microchurch planters, Surekha explains that since moving their residency online due to COVID-19, they have seen an encouraging uptick in how many cultures and nations are being reached. The training his planters go through is more than a conference or workshop — participants are required to plant a micro-church at the end of it!

“Most of the people who go through our training don’t even wait until the end of it to start planting their micro-churches,” says Surekha.

Moore and Pierce are diligent to always bring the conversation back to multiplication. In terms of Level 4 and Level 5 (from the book Becoming a Level 5 Multiplying Church) goals, Surekha follows a simple yet effective strategy whether in a global pandemic or not:

  1. Mission.
  2. Disciple.
  3. Train.
  4. Coach.
  5. Repeat.

We are better together!

“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
John 17:22-23
