The Normies

120 believers were gathered in an upper room when the atmosphere began to change. A wind blew and what looked like tongues of fire rested on a ragtag band of Jesus-followers. We know from the book of Acts that unschooled, ordinary people unleashed a movement that began to saturate the Greco-Roman world. They stumbled and made mistakes. They fasted and prayed. They joined Jesus by making disciples in the everyday stuff of life.

It’s been said that when Constantine declared Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire, he wasn’t declaring what would be, but what was already true. In that historic moment, however, you can see the shift from ordinary people following Jesus in the advance of the Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven to institutional control in the hands of the religious elite. A division occurred between those who could “do ministry” and those who could only watch and receive.

Today, we are seeing a return to our roots. Extraordinarily ordinary people are once again discovering they have a masterpiece mission, a unique calling to bring “up there, down here.” These everyday individuals are not leading second-class programs, they’re the embodiment of the church in their unique context.
