For many of us who have grown up in conservative Christian settings, we have been conditioned to think of social justice as something peripheral to the saving message of Jesus Christ. But upon closer examination of Scripture, we see that God consistently weaves together the spiritual message of salvation with the social message of liberation for people oppressed by injustice.

One of the grandest narratives of God’s heart for justice comes through the book of Esther. In this important Biblical account, we are reminded that there are critical junctures of history where God raises up people of faith to address and confront the oppressive systems of the day. In fact, this moment in Biblical history was so important that it led to Purim – one of the most important Jewish holidays – to commemorate Esther, Queen of Persia, saving the Jewish people from execution by Haman. By courageously standing up for her faith, Esther affected the entire course of human history.

Though our context is different today, many of us still find ourselves staring down a “such a time as this” moment. We are searching for Spirit-led, biblically informed ways in which we can participate in the liberating work of Jesus Christ.

Join us for a special episode of Candid Conversations featuring Rev. Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil. on Tuesday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. ET. Dr. McNeil has been a leading voice for reconciliation and justice for the last three decades in Evangelical circles and is releasing a brand new book entitled Becoming Brave: Finding the Courage to Pursue Racial Justice Now. Here she exegetes the book of Esther, drawing out timeless principles for joining Jesus in the work of racial justice.

We are better together!

“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
John 17:22-23
